Intermodal Transportation in Switzerland and Alptransit
Switzerland is known for its efficient intermodal transportation network, which combines road and rail transport to reduce CO2 emissions. The use of intermodal truck-train transportation offers several advantages in terms of emission reduction. The Confederation has invested heavily in its railway infrastructure, allowing for effective integration between road and rail transport. Alptransit is a railway project aimed at improving train transit through the Swiss mountain regions. The project consists of the Gotthard Tunnel, inaugurated in 2016, which is currently the world’s longest tunnel at 57 kilometers. It connects Erstfeld in the Uri Canton with Bodio in Ticino Canton. The tunnel significantly reduces travel times between Zurich and Milan.
The Lötschberg Tunnel, inaugurated in 2007, connects Frutigen in Bern Canton with Raron in the Rhone Valley. Finally, the Monte Ceneri Tunnel connects Upper Ticino with Lower Ticino, facilitating the exchange of goods and passengers between the two regions.
What We Do as Hub & Logistics
By leveraging Switzerland’s efficient rail network and the Alptransit project, which promotes rail transport to alleviate road traffic, Hub & Logistics entrusts its shipments to partners who use the intermodal system. They utilize trucks for pickup and last-mile delivery, while employing rail services to move the goods between the pickup and delivery warehouses, thereby avoiding traffic issues and significantly reducing emissions.
By shifting the load from trucks to trains, the number of vehicles on the road is reduced, subsequently lowering CO2 emissions from road transport. Trains have higher energy efficiency compared to trucks and can cover longer distances with fewer emissions. Moreover, the use of electric trains powered by renewable energy sources further contributes to reducing environmental impact.
