Bernina Express

The Red Train of Bernina, also known as the Bernina Express, is a famous scenic train that crosses the spectacular Swiss and Italian Alps. It takes its name from the Bernina railway line, which connects the Swiss town of Chur with the Italian town of Tirano. This railway line is operated by the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) in Switzerland. On the highest railway tracks in Europe and the steepest in the world, the Bernina Express offers a unique journey through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges. From the oldest city in Switzerland, through wild gorges and past architectural marvels, to the eternal ice of glaciers and back down to the palm trees of Tirano: no other railway crosses the Alps so spectacularly. Modern panoramic carriages provide top-notch travel comfort, bringing the breathtaking landscapes close at hand.

A bit of history

The Bernina Railway, inaugurated on July 1, 1908, spans approximately 60 kilometers, connecting Chur in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy through the Alps. Noteworthy for its engineering prowess, the railway reaches altitudes exceeding 2,300 meters, making it one of Europe’s highest railways for public transportation. Originally designed for cargo and passenger transport in the alpine region, it has become increasingly popular among tourists for its stunning landscapes.

The Bernina Express, or the Red Train of Bernina, evolved into a tourist service, providing a unique journey through breathtaking alpine scenery. Recognizing its historical and cultural importance, the Bernina Railway earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008.

Transport goods with Bernina Express

The Bernina Red Train, in addition to serving as a means of transportation for passengers along the Rhaetian Railway, also plays a crucial role in freight transport. Various goods, including food supplies, stone, timber, and mineral oils, are swiftly transported and delivered while adhering to all environmental standards. The annual movement of people and goods along the entire route of the Bernina Red Train of the Rhaetian Railway amounts to approximately 700,000 tons of goods and involves about 2,000,000 passengers. This highlights the significant contribution of the Bernina Red Train not only in passenger transport but also in facilitating efficient and sustainable freight transport along the scenic route of the Alps.

Where to get to

The Bernina Express travels between Tirano in Italy and St. Moritz in Switzerland, passing through the scenic landscapes of the Swiss and Italian Alps. It is also possible to join the journey from Lugano by taking a bus to Tirano. Note that in this case, you have to book your seat in advance.

Special tips!

  1. Arrive Early: Arriving early before the departure time can increase your chances of getting the seat you prefer. There is no chance to reserve your seat.

  2. Choose Scenic Seating: Opt for panoramic cars to maximize your views of the stunning landscapes along the journey.

  3. Dress Comfortably: Wear comfortable clothing and consider bringing layers, as the weather in the mountains can vary. Being comfortable enhances your overall enjoyment of the trip.
