Oeschinensee, above Kandersteg in Switzerland, is a beautiful alpine lake, fed by glacial streams from peaks like Blüemlisalp. It’s one of the larger Alpine lakes, situated at 1,578 meters above sea level. During summer, the lake’s temperature can reach 20°C, making it ideal for swimming. Activities such as rowing or enjoying the summer toboggan run are popular. To reach Oeschinensee, one can travel to Kandersteg by car or train, then take a gondola near the lake, followed by a half-hour walk through pastures and pine forests.
The area offers dining options like Restaurant Bergstübli, serving Swiss specialties. Hiking the panoramic trail around the lake is a popular activity, with breathtaking views. The 8.5 km trail, suitable for families with children over 6 years old, winds through pine forests and along the lake’s shore, taking about 3 hours to complete. In winter, activities include free skiing for children and beginners, tobogganing, and snowshoe trails.

How to get Oeschinensee
By Train: You can take a train to Kandersteg, the nearest town to Lake Oeschinen. From major Swiss cities like Interlaken, Bern, and Zurich, there are convenient train connections to Kandersteg. For example, from Interlaken, the journey takes about 1 hour and 12 minutes with one change in Spiez. The train station in Kandersteg is about a 15-minute walk to the gondola station that takes you up to the lake area.
By Car: If you’re driving, head to Kandersteg and follow the signs to the Oeschinensee cable car station. Parking is available near the cable car station, but remember to pay for parking. You can use coins at the meter machines or a mobile parking app.
Gondola Ride: Most visitors take the gondola from Kandersteg up the mountain to reach Oeschinen Lake. The gondola ride is quite affordable compared to other Swiss mountain gondolas.
Hiking to the Lake: From the top of the gondola station, it’s a scenic walk of about 2 kilometers to the lake. This hike is considered easy and takes approximately 40 minutes one way. The path is a wide dirt road, making it accessible for most visitors. Alternatively, if you’re up for a more challenging hike, you can take the 4.8-mile Oeschinensee Panoramweg, which includes 400 meters of ascent and descent, offering stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
Once at the lake, you can engage in various activities like swimming, boating, picnicking, and hiking on the Panorama trail. There are also restaurants around the lake for dining.
The best time to visit Lake Oeschinen is during the summer months, from July to mid-September, when the hiking trails are clear of snow, and the lake is warmest. The cable car operates with extended hours during these months. In winter, from early December to early March, the cable car is open for the ski season, but hiking trails will be closed due to snow and ice.
For accommodations, Kandersteg offers various options ranging from budget to more upscale hotels, making it a good base for exploring the lake and the surrounding area.
