duties abolition
Starting next year, Switzerland will no longer require proof of origin for duty-free imports. While importers can still provide and record proof of origin, it won’t grant additional tariff exemption benefits; it will function like current customs classifications exempt from tariffs. However, importers must have valid proof of origin for goods requiring re-export, such as to EU member states, or for use in Switzerland for accumulation. Eliminating tariffs allows importers to pay nothing based on the tariff rate and weight of the imported goods, without affecting their origin. For instance, importing clothing from Italy will no longer incur customs duties if the goods are definitively imported and remain in Switzerland. Nonetheless, importers can still maintain the “chain” of preferential origin for re-export by following current guidelines.
