In Switzerland, starting next year, importers won’t need proof of origin for duty-free imports. While proof of origin can still be provided and recorded, it won’t offer additional tariff exemption benefits. Instead, it will function similarly to current customs classifications exempt from tariffs. However, valid proof of origin will be necessary for goods requiring re-export, such as to EU member states, or for use in Switzerland for accumulation. Eliminating tariffs allows importers to pay nothing based on tariff rate and weight, without affecting origin. For example, importing clothing from Italy won’t incur customs duties if goods are definitively imported and remain in Switzerland. Nonetheless, maintaining the “chain” of preferential origin will still be possible for re-export, following current guidelines.
