Schopenhauer’s “Die Kunst, Recht zu Behalten”: A Guide to Argumentation Strategies
Schopenhauer’s essay, “Die Kunst, Recht zu Behalten,” (the Art of Winning an Argument) is a concise guide on the strategies and fallacies of argumentation. Although not a systematic treatise on ethics, it explores the psychology of winning arguments. In this work, Schopenhauer identifies 38 stratagems and tactics to secure victory in debates, acknowledging the often deceptive and irrational nature of human reasoning in the pursuit of intellectual triumph. Arthur Schopenhauer (1788–1860) was a German philosopher known for his influential work in the 19th century. He developed a pessimistic philosophy that emphasized the inherent suffering in human existence and explored the nature of desire, the will, and the pursuit of happiness. His major work, “The World as Will and Representation,” profoundly influenced later philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche.
